Music for Passiontide – an invitation to sing Stainer
Posted by sop2 on 19/01/2010
Shrewsbury Choral Society is inviting people to come and sing at their next concert on Saturday 27th March at 4:30pm in St Mary’s Church, Shrewsbury featuring the ever-popular ‘Crucifixion’ by Sir John Stainer. There will also be a pre-concert performance workshop at the church.
Martin Schellenberg, Conductor and Musical Director for Shrewsbury Choral Society said: “‘The Crucifixion’ is an oratorio of great beauty and has many hummable tunes, rousing choruses and most memorable hymn-tunes. This piece is both thoughtful and dramatic and Stainer wrote this extended Passiontide meditation which ordinary choirs could perform and to which congregations could immediately relate. In this respect he was extremely successful as the enduring popularity of ‘The Crucifixion’ continues to testify.
The exciting and rewarding opportunity to take part in the workshop and sing in the performance will start at 10:15am with the performance at 4:30pm and will cost £15.00 which will include music, tuition, coffee/tea and light refreshments. Do come along and have a good sing. To book a place, visit our website and download the booking form which must be returned by 27th February 2010. The workshop and concert will be performed by the SCS with organist Tim Mills. The Choir will be joined by professional soloists, and in addition to the Stainer composition will also sing works by Finzi and Lotti which are suitable for this season before Easter”.
Tickets (£8 adults / unreserved; and £2 children) may be purchased online or (01743) 443146, from Shrewsbury Choral Society members, or from Art Framing, Mardol, Shrewsbury.
