The choir sang with conviction and sparkle….. (Review of A Seasonal Celebration 19/12/09)

An exhilarating performance was given by the Shrewsbury Choral Society and the Mercia Brass Academy on Saturday evening at St. Chad’s Church, Shrewsbury. The choir sang with conviction and sparkle under their conductor Martin Schellenberg and there was never a dull moment for performers and audience alike as we all enjoyed singing the familiar carols with a firm lead from Tim Mills on the organ and exciting playing from the brass. Festive readings provided an ideal contrast, and the climax of the evening was a well co-ordinated performance of the Hallelujah Chorus with everyone involved. Handel would have been pleased at the end of his celebratory year.

Martin Schellenberg himself was a most convivial compere and his rehearsing of The Twelve Days of Christmas was a joy. It was well worth battling through the cold to experience the warmth of this occasion and we all left feeling elated! [Michael Davey]
