Beethoven Concert - 30 October 2021

Coriolanus Overture Op. 62

Composed by Beethoven in 1807 for Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s 10804 tragedy Coriolanus based on Shakespeare’s play

Emperor Concerto Op.73

Composed by Beethoven in 1809 in Vienna as Vienna was under siege by Napoleon’s armies, his fifth concerto for piano and orchestra is regarded by many as his finest contribution to the concerto genre. Beethoven himself could not play for the debut performance owing to his increasing deafness.

Here it is performed by our guest soloist, Danish pianist Filip Michalak with the Shrewsbury Sinfonia (leader Anne Tupling) conducted by Dr Martin Cook.

Mass in C, Op.86

Composed by Beethoven in response to a commission from Prince Nikolaus Esterházy II in 1807, the work received a poor debut at Eisenstadt and faced stinging criticism from Prince Nikolaus himself. It has been described as Beethoven’s “most humiliating public failure”! Fortunately, now, it is regarded as a long-underrated masterpiece and unjustly neglected.

Here it is performed by Shrewsbury Choral & Sinfonia (leader Anne Tupling) conducted by Dr Matin Cook with soloists Jessica Hope, Felicity Buckland, John Bowen and Piran Legg.
